The Annual Home Education Evaluation is the yearly evaluation Florida law requires for registered home education students. I am Brandon Smith, a Florida-certified teacher, and I do it by video, in thirty minutes or less, for families anywhere in Florida.

Book Your Evaluation · $50

We meet on a live video call for thirty minutes or less. I review the portfolio with you and talk with your child for a few minutes. Those are the two things the law asks of a teacher's evaluation: a review of the portfolio and a discussion with the student.
Within two business days I send the signed evaluation form, with my Florida certificate number on it. You file a copy with your district.
Nothing needs to be gathered or organized in advance. Bring whatever you have and we will sort it out together.
$50 per student, plus $50 for each additional child on the same call. Families book this from across Florida, so you do not need to live near me. If you are near Cape Coral or Fort Myers, you can ask to meet in person.

WHO NEEDS ONE
It depends on how your child is registered. Find your family below.
01
Yes. If you filed a letter of intent with your school district, Florida law asks for an evaluation once a year. You choose the method, and you file a copy of the result with the district superintendent's office.
02
Yes. If your FES-UA student is in a home education program, you have a letter of intent on file with your district, so the same law applies. The FES-UA handbook lists annual home education evaluation fees as an eligible expense, which means the scholarship can pay for it.
03
No. A PEP student is registered with a scholarship organization and has no letter of intent with the district. PEP asks for a nationally norm-referenced test or the statewide assessment each year. I do not offer this evaluation to PEP families. If you book one by mistake, tell me and I will cancel it and refund anything you paid.

WHAT FLORIDA ASKS FOR
The home education law is section 1002.41 of the Florida Statutes. These answers come from its text and from the Department of Education's FAQ for parents.
One evaluation a year that documents your child's educational progress at a level commensurate with his or her ability. The law gives five ways to do it. A Florida-certified teacher can review the portfolio and talk with your child. A certified teacher can give a nationally normed achievement test, or a state assessment test under conditions the district approves. A licensed psychologist or school psychologist can evaluate your child. Or you and the superintendent can agree on another valid tool. You pick the method.
No. For a student in a home education program, a test is one of the five options and the choice is yours. PEP is a separate program with its own rule, and PEP students do take a test each year.
For a portfolio review, a teacher you choose who holds a valid regular Florida certificate to teach academic subjects at the elementary or secondary level. Mine is Florida Professional Educator's Certificate #1301675. Verify this certificate with the Florida Department of Education
Once a year. The Department of Education counts the year from the date of your letter of intent, so the evaluation is due by the anniversary of that letter. If you cannot make the date, ask your district for an extension. The law does not require the district to grant one.
Two things. The first is a log of educational activities, kept as you go, that names the reading materials you used by title. The second is samples of your child's writings, worksheets, workbooks or creative work. You decide what goes in. You keep the portfolio for two years, and the superintendent can ask to see it with 15 days' written notice.
File a copy with your district school superintendent's office, and keep a copy along with proof that the district received it. The law says the superintendent shall accept the results. If an evaluation shows a child has not made progress, the parent gets written notice and one year to provide remedial instruction before the child is evaluated again.
Mine is $50 per student, and $50 for each additional child on the same call. The statute sets no fee, so each evaluator sets a price.
FES-UA funds can. If Step Up For Students manages your scholarship, choose Reserve Without Paying when you book, and you will not be asked for a card. Then reserve the $50 in EMA before we meet: open the Marketplace, select your student, choose Annual Home Education Evaluation Fees as the service category and service type, and type in Florida Curriculum Consulting. If you pay by card and plan to ask for reimbursement, I send an itemized paid receipt and a copy of my teaching certificate.
